EDIT: It seems most people responding are missing my captions. I don’t have a problem with them asking to be whitelisted, though they’ve already burned that bridge afaic.

yeah... but.. whilst those are good.... none of them acknowledge that no one would be using adblockers if the adds went back to being quiet unobtrusive things you have to click on before anything happens... like they used to be... once upon a time

If a website asks me to whitelist but still lets me browse, allowing to make my own decision, I’m okay with the ask.

Those that state if I don’t whitelist I can’t get their content get knocked immediately off my browser.

Final thought: If your ads are so bad that people write programs to block them, the program isn’t the problem

Whitelisting is allowing certain pages to display ads while blocking all others. It came up because someone(or a few people?) started seeing ads here on Oppo.

As well as malware injecting bullshit. I actually used to have adblock set to allow certain sites to show unobtrusive ads, but that was abused as well. So now no more.

I’m not a sports guy, but if I were presented with such a specific ask from a site I was enjoying for free, I’d seriously consider it.

yeah that too.... i missed a pop up once as i stepped out to make meself some coffee... came back and my computer was all kindsa hijacked by win protect or some shit (probably not exactly that)... in any event.. stupid pop up would pop up near instantly after rebooting.... was a bear to fix

You would because they’re totally random. All 3 came from hockey pages.

“Whitelisting” in this case is just allowing a site to show ads.

Hehe, it’s been years and years since I’ve used an adblocker since 99% of my internet work is on business machines or mobile devices. I almost forgot they existed.

I wouldn’t be using an adblocker on SN, EXCEPT for the fact that one of the ads they were showing shoved the page down about 4" and didn’t go away.

Now I have an adblocker, and the page works. Hmm. Seems like the logical thing to do would be whitelist them, right?

IF it was just the sidebar ads, INSTEAD of a whopping 4" full width ad at the top that didn’t go away as you scrolled, and IF they didn’t have autoplaying video ads... I wouldn’t have an adblocker at all. But there’s a reason I do.

Anyway... seems like everyone is missing the captions to the pictures. I don’t have problems with them asking. I just think they could have chosen a better term for the hockey one.

Linux....

Edit: In all seriousness, this is a major bonus running Linux that I forget until I’m taking with people running Windows about the weirdness of malware. Technically Linux could be compromised just as easily as Windows, but if Linux ever became a major target, locking down the sudo privileges is really easy.

Chrome is going to start blocking a variety of shitty ads by default, which is going to force people to stop running them (hopefully). It’s well needed, I tried browsing the Kinjaverse without an ad blocker a couple months ago and immediately had an autoplay video ad screaming at me.
